Miles & Memories

Through the Tunnel, Toward the Light

Bay Bound

There’s something magical about lighthouses- maybe it’s the way they stand guard at the edge of the world, or how they’ve guided so many home through the fog. Whatever it is, Point Bonita has it.

Tucked into the Marin Headlands, Point Bonita Lighthouse isn’t just a pretty photo op (though it definitely delivers on that). It’s a full-on experience- equal parts history, hike, and heart-pounding adventure.

The walk out there isn’t short. You’ll trek a paved path along dramatic cliffs with sweeping views of the Pacific, then descend through a dark tunnel carved into the rock. And just when you think you’ve made it- there it is. The suspension bridge.

Let’s just say my knees were a little wobbly. That bridge swings just enough to keep you humble. With waves crashing far below and wind rushing around you- crossing it feels like something out of a movie. But once you’re across? Worth. Every. Step.

Built in 1855, Point Bonita Lighthouse was the third lighthouse on the West Coast and still operates today. Originally perched higher on the cliffs, it had to be moved lower so the light could cut through the infamous fog.

We were lucky to have kind and knowledgeable docents stationed along the trail, ready to share stories, answer questions, and reassure hesitant bridge-crossers (ahem, me). They made the visit even more special.

Mai Boys loved every minute- climbing, running, exploring, shouting into the wind. It’s the kind of outing that wears you out in the best way. A real walk-meets-workout-meets-wonder kind of day.

So if you’re looking for a way to explore the Bay that’s beautiful, bold, and just a little bit brave, Point Bonita is calling.
