Kauai Kidventures
If you’re looking for one of Kauai’s most serene hidden gems, this peaceful spot nestled near Kīlauea might just win your heart.

Quiet, Inviting & Beautiful
The Kīlauea Stone Dam is tucked along the Wai Koa Loop Trail, surrounded by a lush mahogany forest and gentle ponds. The trail itself is flat and beginner-friendly, perfect for a relaxed hike that culminates in beautiful views and the soft sound of water flowing over old stone.

A Walk Through History
Built in the early 1880s, this dam was part of the Kīlauea Sugar Plantation’s water system, designed to pool water and manage irrigation during dry seasons. Today, it sits at the heart of Wai Koa Plantation’s trail system, offering benches, serene grassy spots, and even a Buddha statue tucked nearby. It’s a peaceful pause with historical roots.

A Local’s Nudge to Jump In
We spotted swings and a ladder by that calm stretch of water, what an absolute temptation to jump right in. But we hesitated. Was swimming allowed? Was it safe? Unsure, we held back. That is, until a friendly local, someone who’d lived in the area for over 50 years, shrugged and laughed, saying, “You should’ve totally jumped in, that’s how we’ve always done it.”That little nudge from a long-time local added a layer of warmth to our visit we didn’t expect. Next time we visit, we will definitely jump in!

- Stay Safe Before Taking the Plunge: If you’re tempted to swim, check conditions, ask around, but also trust that local reassurance- it just might be okay for a dip.
