It was one of those evenings where the sky looked moody, like it couldn’t decide whether to hold the clouds in or let them pour out. But we did what we usually do: loaded up the kids, packed our rucks, and hit the trail anyway. We’ve learned that some of the best memories are made when plans aren’t perfect. Miner’s Loop at Black Mountain Canyon Preserve was the trail of choice this time.
The trail itself was manageable with the kids- not too steep, not too flat, and full of just enough rocky sections and switchbacks to keep them curious. As always, they had their little rucks strapped tight like mini adventurers, tossing in snacks, water, random nature “treasures,” and whatever else they could justify carrying.
Something about a light drizzle made the trail feel quieter, more peaceful. It was like we had the preserve to ourselves. We didn’t see another group the entire time. It gave us that rare combination of stillness and movement—where the only sounds were our own footsteps, a few bird calls, and the occasional, “Look, Mom!” from one of Mai Boys.
As we finished the loop and made it back to the trailhead, the drizzle picked up slightly, but by then, no one cared.
Final Thoughts
Miner’s Loop is family-friendly, has enough terrain variety to keep it interesting, and made the perfect canvas for one of those unexpected, slow-paced, let-the-weather-do-its-thing kind of hikes. Sometimes it’s not about perfect skies or ideal conditions, it’s about getting out there, being together, and letting the mayhem make the memory.
