Little Sakana – Mira Mesa | San Diego CA

I ordered catering plates from Little Sakana for Colston’s birthday and they did not disappoint.
First impression? The presentation was beautiful. The platters were arranged in clean, organized rows with a really vibrant mix of colors- deep orange salmon, glossy ruby tuna, creamy avocado greens, bright pops of tobiko, and perfectly white rice that looked fresh and structured (not mushy or overpacked). Everything looked purposeful and balanced, not thrown together.
The rolls were cut evenly and tightly wrapped, which I always notice. No loose rice, no collapsing pieces when you pick them up- just solid, well-rolled sushi that holds its shape. The fish had that fresh sheen to it, and nothing looked dry or dull. Even after sitting out for a bit during serving, it still looked appetizing.
They included a nice variety- classic rolls, specialty rolls, and a good balance of cooked and raw options, which made it crowd-friendly. That’s important when you’re ordering for a group. Everyone found something they liked.
Taste-wise? Fresh. Clean. Not overly fishy. The rice had a good texture, soft but not sticky-heavy. The fish tasted high quality, and the specialty rolls weren’t drowning in sauce (which I personally appreciate). Everything felt balanced.
What stood out most was how well it worked for catering. The trays were full, visually appealing, and easy for guests to serve themselves.
If you’re hosting something and want sushi that looks as good as it tastes, Little Sakana catering plates are a solid choice.
