Stonewall Peak in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park doesn’t waste time easing you in, it starts with an incline right from the trailhead and never really lets up. Thankfully, it’s a steady uphill rather than a steep grind, which makes it perfect for rucking. You’ll feel it, but it’s the kind of climb that keeps you moving without breaking you.
The trail itself is beautiful- open views, patches of shade, and plenty to keep you motivated as you make your way toward the summit. But just before you reach the top, the vibe shifts from “steady hike” to “a little bit of a scramble.” You’ll navigate slick boulders and then hit the stone staircase that takes you the rest of the way up.
Those stairs are steep, narrow, and have nothing but a metal handrail between you and the edge. The views are incredible even from halfway up, but this is where you have to slow down- especially if you’re hiking with kids. Hold their hands, ensure they stay on the inside, and maintain a firm grip on the rail yourself. The steps can feel a little exposed, and it’s not the place to rush.
Once you’re at the top, you’ll understand why it’s worth every step. The 360-degree panoramic views stretch across the Cuyamaca Mountains, Lake Cuyamaca, and rolling valleys that seem to go on forever.

And because it’s near Julian, our post-hike tradition is non-negotiable: apple pie. After that kind of climb, it’s more than a treat, it’s a victory slice.
Stonewall Peak is the perfect balance of challenge and reward. If you go, take your time on the stairs, enjoy the views, and soak in the fact that you’re standing somewhere truly spectacular.
