Hilo Highlights

Some of the best meals I’ve ever had haven’t come from upscale restaurants or places with long waitlists, they’ve come from the little hole-in-the-wall spots that most people would drive right past. Kenichi in Hilo was exactly that kind of place.
From the moment we walked in, the service was warm and welcoming. The staff made us feel like regulars instead of tourists, and that friendly, laid-back atmosphere set the tone for the entire meal.
Now let’s talk about the food.
The Korean Fried Chicken was hands down some of the best we’ve ever had. It was perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and coated in a sauce that had just the right balance of sweet, savory, and a little kick. Every bite made us slow down just to appreciate how good it was.
The Ramen was just as impressive. Rich, flavorful broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and everything tasted fresh and comforting without feeling overly heavy. Since coming back home, we’ve tried to find a place in San Diego that comes close, and we haven’t. That’s how memorable this meal was.
For dessert, we ordered the Apple Crumble. It was good, but it didn’t leave the same impression as the rest of our meals. To be fair, I may be a little biased growing up on Julian apple pie, which is still my gold standard when it comes to apple desserts (review is coming soon).
Kenichi is a reminder that some of the most unforgettable dining experiences come from the most unassuming places. No flashy exterior, no over-the-top presentation, just genuinely great food made well and served by people who care.
It’s easy to get caught up chasing the newest trendy restaurant, but sometimes the places with the biggest flavors are tucked away where you least expect them. Kenichi is one of those hidden gems that made our trip to Hilo even more memorable, and it’s a restaurant we’d gladly return to every time we’re back on the Big Island.
