Roughing It (but not really)

Camping at Kings Canyon

Peace, Pines and the Perfect Escape

If you’re looking for a camping trip that lets you truly unplug, Kings Canyon is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression. One of Mai favorite parts of the trip was that we were able to turn the drive into an adventure by exploring the giant sequoias at Sequoia National Park before heading to camp. It made the journey feel like part of the experience, rather than just a drive to the destination.

Because we chose dispersed camping, we had the freedom to find our own little slice of nature. There were a few great spots to choose from, and once we found ours, it felt like we had the forest all to ourselves. No crowded campgrounds, no constant noise – just the sound of the wind moving through the trees and the occasional birdsong.

Mai Boys absolutely loved it. They spent hours exploring, climbing over fallen logs, discovering little trails, and simply being kids without screens or schedules. It reminded me how little they actually need when they’re surrounded by nature.

The towering trees provided plenty of shade throughout the day, making camp comfortable even during the warmer hours. As the sun set, the forest transformed into a completely different kind of beautiful. The night sky was incredible, with countless stars stretching overhead and no light pollution to compete with them. Sitting around camp beneath that sky was easily one of the highlights of the trip.

One thing to keep in mind is the elevation. You definitely notice it, especially if you’re planning to hike. Trails can feel more challenging than their mileage suggests, so take your time, stay hydrated, and don’t be surprised if you need a few extra breaks.

If you’re looking for a camping destination that offers solitude, beautiful scenery, room for kids to explore, and the opportunity to experience both the giant sequoias and the peaceful forests of Kings Canyon in one trip, this is a place I recommend.
